Grading & Bat Care
Every bat that arrives at Smash Bats is checked for quality. This involves the Smash Bats 'Swing & Ping' test which ensures the cane handle is made with cork/rubber inserts for better shock absorption, that it's securely held in place to cope with all the smashing and that the willow has been pressed sufficiently to give that all important 'ping'.
Grading the Willow
Grade 1
Bat face has limited colouring or stain with a higher number of straight grains.
Grade 2
Bat face may have an increased amount of 'red' and/or stain. The number of grains will be lower and may be a bit wonky.
Grade 3
Bat face will have a significant amount of 'red' and/or stain. The number of grains will be low.

Preparation & Maintenance
Grading is mainly about appearance, reflecting the wood's attractiveness. It does not affect performance; a grade 3 bat can hit just as far as a grade 1 bat. English Willow trees are harvested when they reach a specific size. More grains indicate slower growth, while fewer grains suggest faster growth. A higher grain count means wood, closer to being game-ready. Conversely, lower grain trees are softer and need more preparationDon’t assume a bat is ready just because it's labeled as such. Always apply two coats of bat oil, allowing each to dry, and avoid stickers before knocking it. Spend hours hammering the face, using soft balls initially. If the ball leaves imprints, the bat isn’t ready for competitive play. Bats a limited lifespan, and proper care can extend it. Factors shortening a bat’s life include: - Improper preparation - Excessive tapping that allows moisture in - Throwing the bat in frustration - General wear from frequent use Cracks and breakages may happen and repairs should be considered before buying a new one. Remember, cricket bats don’t come with warranties; they are natural products, not manufactured goods.
